MAN JUMPS INTO RIVER, MENTIONS BUHARI

A major tragedy was averted yesterday in Lagos, when a man jumped into the river on the Mile Two Bridge in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area.

The unidentified man, according to eyewitnesses, stood on the bridge for some minutes, loudly expressed bitterness over his sufferings and how things had gone bad for him and his helplessness.

He was said to have mentioned Buhari repeatedly, muttered some other words before he finally took the terrible decision.

However, the timely intervention of a passing speedboat prevented the victim, who is in his 40s, from drowning.

Passengers on the speedboat dived into the river, dragged the man who was gasping for breath to the riverbank, and continued their journey.

A witness, Mr. Andy Odiaka, said the victim, who wore native clothes, was left on the floor for a while, unconscious.

Odiaka told Daily Sun that he called the state emergency number – 112, which facilitated the arrival of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) in about 20 minutes.

The three-man medical team, went ahead of the bus to resuscitate the victim. According to one of the medics, the man had to be given first aid drip, explaining that he was too weak to make it to the hospital.

Odiaka said: “I was there on the bridge where the man was also standing. He was speaking to himself. He said he had no transport fare to move from one place to another. He said his suffering was too much that he could hardly feed. I also heard him saying life was meaningless to him. He mentioned Buhari many times, and the next thing I saw, the man jumped from the bridge into the water.

“He is an Igbo man because he was speaking the language. I thought he was joking when he said he was tired of everything around him. “If not for a speedboat that was passing, he would have died. The boat stopped and the passengers dragged him to the riverbank and they continued their journey.

“Thereafter, nobody was ready to assist him. People simply looked at him, expressed sympathy and continued their journey. I have to call an emergency number,” he said.

Before the ambulance came, it was gathered that sympathisers, including Mr Odiaka, contributed about N1, 000, with the intention of taking the victim to the hospital.

Another witness, who simply gave his name as Okpala, said he ran to the place and saw the man almost dying, but did noit know what to do to help him out of the situation. He said he mobilised others at the scene to donate money to take the victim to a hospital.

“The man said he was tired of life and he wanted to kill himself,” he said.

When the victim’s pockets were searched for any means identity, only N90 was found on him.

NPOWER: 1. 2 MILLION REGISTER FOR FG'S 5000 JOBS

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige has urged all unemployed Nigerians to register on the online job portal of the Social Intervention Scheme of the Federal Government in order to benefit from different categories of programmes which government is offering. The registration on the portal, Npower.gov.ng, ends Wednesday, August 31, 2016.
This is just as he disclosed that only 1.2 million unemployed Nigerians had so far registered for the scheme.

The Minister made the call over the weekend while flagging off the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) School-to-Work Programme in Calabar, Cross River State.
“Unfortunately as we speak, by last week, the portal for the Social Intervention Scheme had only recorded about 1.2 million persons. We expect more persons to have been registered on the portal before our screening exercise. The portal closes 31st August 2016 which is just few days away,” Ngige said.

“ For those who are not computer literate, we advise state governments to encourage them by using local government chairmen to move into local government areas to register the unemployed persons there, so that they can qualify to be considered for the scheme. Each state of the federation is expected to recruit about 1,500 persons.”

Speaking on the School-To-Work programme, which he summarised as an expression of a renewed vigour by the ministry under him to catch them young, the minister said it was also a bold attempt to build a future Nigeria where white-collar jobs would be unattractive.

“ We are building a generation of Nigerians where creative thinking, self-confidence and dignity of labour will challenge the prevailing unemployment scourge,” he added.

We are building a generation of Nigerians who will not only create wealth with their hands but are proud employers with skills from hands that God has given them.”

“ This is two month vacation creative job learning scheme for students in JSS 1 to SSS 2 classes. It is meant to provide them with skills early in life so that they can graduate and earn a living if they wish not to continue after secondary education or have an income earning skill to fall back on while doing higher education.

This set of students will graduate to higher skills training the next vacation while others succeed them. By this, we are re-thinking a university education system where graduates fold hands and wait for food on their table,” Ngige said.

The Minister disclosed that a total of one hundred and fifty persons will be trained yearly from each of the states of the federation under the scheme which has Calabar, Anambra, Bauchi, Katsina, Kogi and Ondo as the headquarters for the six zonal training centres.

He added that the programme was built with enough provision for decent work in line with the International Labour Organisation so as to foreclose the possibility of child labour in the course of training and after.

Earlier in an address, the Acting Director General of the NDE, Mr. Kunle Obayan said the NDE was constantly preoccupied with providing initiatives that will address the ever changing forms and patterns of unemployment .

He added that the programme was designed to provide diverse vocational, agricultural and entrepreneurial skills training for secondary school students during long vacation, saying that the age grouping was the best peak to tackle youth unemployment with acquisition of skills.

Speaking when the minister earlier paid him a courtesy call at the Government House Calabar, the State Governor , Prof. Ben Ayade commended the minister for his foresight and innovative approach in tackling the scourge of unemployment in the country.

MUGABE ORDERS THE ARREST OF ZIMBABWEAN OLYMPIC TEAM

Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe has instructed the Commissioner General of Zimbabwe Police Republic, Augustine Chihuri to arrest and detain the whole Zimbabwean Olympic Team members immediately the arrive at the Harare International Airport on Tuesday, August 23.

Zimbabwe which is one of the countries in the Olympics without a medal presented a team of 31 athletes. The closest any of the athletes came to win a contest was at the 8th position.

Mr. Mugabe who is incensed with the team’s performance told the Police Chief to arrest all the team members and detain them.
“We have wasted the country’s money on these rats we call athletes. If you are not ready to sacrifice and win even copper or brass medals (referring the 4th and 5th positions) as our neighbors Botswana did, then why do you go to waste our money” he said.

If we needed people to just go to Brazil to sing our national anthem and hoist our flag, we would have sent some of the beautiful girls and handsome guys from University of Zimbabwe to represent us.

He added that, the money invested in the team to represent the country could have been used to provide amenities and build schools.

“This situation is like an impotent man who is married to 5 women, what is the essence? I will make sure we share the cost across board for all of them to pay back to government chest even if it take 10 years recoup, now it turns out to be a soft loan we have given them to go and visit Brazil as tourist, they are useless ‘he concluded.

SAVEFUNAAB: THE DIARY OF A FUNAAB STUDENT

A THURSDAY TO REMEMBER

It was my alarm ringing. I just made it stop crying. Oh! I lazilly stood up for solat. I didn't know how but I made it to the 'Teslim'. "My eyes are heavy! I need sleep" I said to myself. I got back on bed, slowly drifting to sleep. Here comes another loud ring. This time it was my roommate's phone, she had a call then started pressing her phone only to get broadcast messages about another robbery. Not again! Sleep left me quickly, we were worried. Someone we know lives there.

Being a punctual student, I prepared for school. I had a practical by 8am. Coming out of the bathroom, my roomate told me a protest had started at Gate. I didn't listen, I said "it wouldn't stop the practical from holding." In a jiffy, I was already at Gate, I saw numerous students. Somehow, I was the last passenger in an hurriedly leaving cab. We drove into school only to realise that the dessert was more fun than the unusual silence in school. I saw a group of girls; they should probably be from the school hostel taking early morning selfies. OMG! I should have listened to my roommate. I soberly walked from school back to gate. I met people I know at Gate. We talked about the protest.

Idleness sets in. We jumped at the news of a thief being apprehended at Gate.we decided to see what was going on. We even had few friends with us too. It was shocking! I had never seen FUNAABITES so angry. I mean you should have been there, students were ready to give it what it takes. Despite his beaten state, he looked stubborn. His eyes were speaking. I'd rather look at the mother's eyes. Her eyes said it all. It was full of plea. Oh mother! Save me too was all I could think of while numerous messages reached us about the policemen having a circus show at camp.

It seemed unbelievable! It snowed teargas and thundered gun shots to scare students away. They cannot contain the anger of the students. I am devastated. We heard several things. At a point, I couldn't even comprehend the situation . I was concerned , network seems to be playing pranks as the phone number of my dear ones were unreachable. Me being fed up, I walked back to my hostel after the thief was safely in police custody. Students were not satisfied by the verdict.

Later on, I received news about the situation of one student that was shot and also the burning of vehicles and destruction of properties. Oga o! In FUNAAB? I even heard policemen arresting students anyhow.

I heard, my ears were full. Same words echoing in different frequencies. As much as I heard. I could hear the voices of brave funaab students, I could hear the lament of the helpless ones, the cries of the victims, the cracking noise of the blazing fire, foot steps of the observers like myself. I could hear truth for the first time as a FUNAABITE. WE WANT A RESTORED FUNAAB

I MOVED THE MOTION FOR THE CONSOLIDATED YOUTH FUND - ADETAYO ADEKUNLE

Prince Adekunle Adetayo
At the 4th National Association of Oyo Students Parlamentary lecture held on Saturday, 9th July, 2016, the OMOIYAKUNMI media had an enlightening chat with the Honorable member of the National Youth Parliament representing Oyo Senatorial Constituency, Prince Adetayo Adekunle As he took us through the system of the parliament and some of his achievements since he assumed the office.

Read along;

OIC:  Can you tell us about the office you occupy and can we say it is a political office?

Prince Adetayo: Thank you very much. As at present, I am a member representing Oyo Central Constituency at the Nigerian Youth Parliament in Abuja. The Nigerian Youth Parliament is a creation of the late President Umar Musa Yar’adua’s administration and it is run by the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports. This Parliament was borne out United Nation’s Charter that encourages more youth participation in governance and decision making. It should be known that this is a global phenomenon… The United Kingdom has a youth parliament which is a full elective body. Malaysia has and as I am speaking with you, Ghana is establishing a youth parliament soon.

OIK: That’s enlightening. Now, let’s look at how you got into the office or seat. Was an election conducted or it was basically on selection?

Prince Adetayo: Well, at the moment, and like the other two previous sessions of the parliament, it has been through selection. This is how it is being done; a selection committee headed by the State Commissioner of Youth and Sports, the representatives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, representatives of voluntary organizations and so on. Presently, we have started drafting a legislative instvrument that will make the membership of the Parliament to be a fully elective one for aspiring youths between the ages of 18 and 35years. We intend to lay it before the National Assembly soon.

OIK: Talking about the Parliament itself, how is it being operated? Is more like the National Assembly?

Prince Adetayo: The Nigerian Youth Parliament is a replica of the Nigerian Senate. It has one hundred and nineteen (119) Honorable members representing their senatorial district based on the existing senatorial composition. Sittings are held in the House of Representatives every quarter. There is a Speaker, a Deputy Speaker and the full paraphernalia of the legislative body. In fact, the Clerk of the National Youth Parliament is the Director of Bills at the Senate. That goes to tell you how important the parliament is to the Federal Government. We sponsor bills, move motions and make resolutions. Already, there is a channel of communication with the Federal Government. Our resolutions are passed directly to the Honorable Minister of Youth and Sports who in turn hands it over to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Personally, I have also been engaged in moving motions. I moved the motion for the creation of a consolidated youth funds that will cater for the entrepreneurial needs of the Nigerian youths because white collar jobs are scare to secure now. And luckily enough, most of my colleagues supported it and the resolution has already been forwarded to the Federal Government.

OIK: If I may ask at this point, ever since you became a member of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, in what way(s) have you been giving members of your constituency feed backs and reports of your assignment?

Prince Adetayo: Hmm… Very soon, I intend organizing a town hall meeting where we would have student leaders, youth leaders from the 11 Local Government areas in my constituency for a proper inter-face. But beyond that, I have been exploiting the social media to pass messages across. Soon, I will be in some radio stations purposely to engage youths in my constituency.

OIK: Briefly, can you shed light on the lecture’s topic ‘Change, a Compelling Task for Us All’?

PRINCE ADETAYO: Yes! The concept of change is a normal phenomenon. Everything in life will at a point experience change. And I want to appreciate the organizers of today’s lecture programme for bringing up a topic we can judge on discussion. I think the topic is a very apt one to this present political dispensation. The current government came in promising change and I am sure this lecture will let us know how far we have gone in the process.

OIK: Good! Now, talking about the State you are from, in what ways have your office impacted or intend to impact in the governance of the state?

PRINCE ADETAYO: On a personal note, I met with the Governor of Oyo State, Gov. Abiola  Ajimobi, a couple of months ago and I was able to present a copy of  a bill titled  ‘Oyo State Youth Empowerment and Development Trust Fund Bill 2016’ to him. I have also consulted with some lawmakers and I wish actions could be expedited to allow quick passage of the bill. I personally gave it to the Governor for him to pass officially to the House of Assembly. This bill seeks to provide funding for youths who have business ideas, set-up capital for tertiary institution graduates and upgrade of our vocational centres across the State. Also, there is a provision in the bill that allows for Public-Private Patnership (PPP). I am very sure that if this bill is passed and signed into law by the State government, it will go a long way in reducing the scourge of unemployment in the State.

Secondly, I have also met with the Chief Judge of Oyo State and I discussed the digitalization of the Oyo State judiciary with him. As of now, lawyers in State who live outside Ibadan and even some who live within must have to get to the Secretariat to find out when he or she has a hearing. I have seen cases where a lawyer travels to Ibadan for a hearing only to be told the Judge had gone on vacation. But if the judiciary is digitalized, in the comfort of his or her room, a lawyer can just click to make enquiries on when a hearing comes up. This will even facilitate quick dispensation of justice and make judgments more accessible.

OIK: Wow, that’s impressive. Now, on a final note, do you see the present office as a propelling opportunity for a political ambition?

PRINCE ADETAYO: (Smiling). Actually, human beings are naturally ambitious but sincerely, I am not overambitious. My life is all about service to humanity. The present post I occupy is just an avenue for me to contribute my quota to the development of the nation. In the nearest future, I may even decide to contest as the Governor of Oyo State.
