INEC POSTPONES ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS IN EDO

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says results of the Edo state governorship election will be announced later on Thursday.

Sam Olumekun, resident electoral commissioner of Edo, disclosed this after a closed-door meeting with a national commissioner and two resident electoral commissioners.

Though Olumekun did not give reasons for the shift, NAN said it could be as a result of the late arrival of results from the 18 local government areas of the state.

TheCable observed that materials started arriving some minutes past 12am.As of the time this report was being filed, three Hilux trucks believed to be conveying electoral materials had arrived the Ikpoba Hill headquarters of the commission in Edo.

However, many journalists, party agents, and election observers were stranded at INEC office as a result of the last-minute decision by the electoral body.

While some of the reporters, who had earlier beenbarred from the collation center were sleeping under the canopy, where the exercise will be relayed through a projector, some observers and agents were stuck at the venue of the collation.

Most of the television reporters left INEC office, probably after getting wind of the new development.

When the commission adopted simultaneous accreditation and voting, many felt the exercise would not drag on for too long.

Voting ended at 2pm in many polling stations across the state.

WHAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LEADERSHIP - OMO IYA KUNMI

Some time in 2007/2008, I was in my second semester as a 300 level student of the Federal University of of Agriculture, Abeokuta when I contested for the post of the President of the Federation of Oyo State Students' Union (FOSSU).

Then, the history of past Presidents of the union reflected that almost all of them came from the Ibadan geo-political zone while there was just only one from the Ibarapa zone. I am sure the likes of Com. Agboola Mojeed, Adekunle Mikail and Ajibike A. Biola will definitely remember this.

According to the records available then, there had never been an Oyo guy to attempt to lead the union. We maintained the back seat as influential as we were then in decisions making. At a point when the Bursary Awards that has always been a motivation for us to meet and discuss on the state of the Union was not coming, about 60% active members became passive. This happened during the tenure of Com. Zobo, another Ibadan guy.

The passiveness and lackadaisical attitude of most members led the union to a state of stagnancy. Then some of us wanted to resuscitate the union. We demanded that Com. Zobo conducts the elections and hand over since his tenure was over. After many attempts, he indeed set up a an electoral committee reluctantly.
Amidst the hullabaloo, I discovered that there was no Oyo guy attempting to come on-board to serve. Without further considerations and consultation, I offered to contest for the post of the President. I began my crusade which didn't involve Oyo Students alone but I canvassed even students from other States.
In the course of this, three candidates came up and two of which were from Ibadan. I think the last guy stepped down for me. The dream of becoming the first FOSSU President seemed a mirage.

Now, if God hadn't destined me to be the President, I don't think I should have emerged. I started this crusade solely without consultations. I relied on my personality on and off campus. Sanni Rukayat Oluwaseyi, was one of my backbones then even though she wasn't from Oyo town.

It the course of my campaign, I was always quick to tell members 'I will buy you bus', 'I will buy you this..' I will do this...' I will do that...' I remember one lady (I won't mention are names, though she joined my team later) who confronted me on one occasion, 'Oga, see how you are blabbing as if you can do it alone. What about your excos? Wont you carry them along?" Chai.. I was so embarrassed but I found my way out of the situation that day.

It was only later that some people who believed in my dreams and wanted power shift from the Ibadan zone started coming around. These were actually the people who worked tirelessly for the agenda to become a reality. I still remain egbon mi Olorunkosebi Abdulahi who was always scolding me, "Bawo lo se fese iru nkan bayi to o ni sofun wa. O fe doju ti Oyo ni?" (How could you attempt some thing like this without telling us, do you want to shame Oyo town)

I LEARNT MY FIRST LESSON: A TRUE LEADER CONSULTS BEFORE TAKING VITAL DECISIONS.
The election came and I won. It came as a rude shock to the Ibadans cos they had a larger population. All thanks to those who supported me back then. This swell me up, as in, I became so 'powerful' so to say that I found it difficult listening to ides and suggestions from people and my excos.

The election came and I won. It came as a rude shock to the Ibadans cos they had a larger population. All thanks to those who supported me back then. This swell me up, as in, I became so 'powerful' so to say that I found it difficult listening to ideas and suggestions from people and my excos.

I would write official correspondences, sign them singularly and even dispatch them. I was the one collecting annual dues. I would be the one pasting info and disseminating it around the campus. I simply sidelined my excos. I felt I was the most efficient and that no one can do it better than I.

At a time, I became worn out. The popularity of the Union, which was regained during the election campaigns started diminishing simply because I was selfish. I didn't even mind until I discovered that the Federation of Ibadan Students' Union (FIBSU) is becoming more popular than FOSSU.

I hurriedly organized a programme tagged 'Amala Day', it was 100% colourful and we had dignitaries in attendance. Unfortunately, only one of my excos was in attendance. I was the one in trying to be everywhere and at the end the success wasn't as much as we expected.

THERE AND THEN, I LEARNT ANOTHER LESSON. A LEADER CAN NEVER BE EVERYWHERE. HE SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO TAKE FULL GLORIES OF HIS ACHIEVEMENTS. A TRUE LEADER SHOULD WORK WITH HIS PEOPLE AND THE CREDITS OF HIS ACHIEVEMENT SHOULD GO TO HIS PEOPLE.

Like my people will say, 'Agbaj'owo la fi nsoya, owo kan ko gberu dori'

Enikan kiii je awade...

Mo so eyi, mo duro na Ayinde Commander...

HOUSE OF REPS SUSPENDS JIBRIN ABDULMUMIN FOR 180 LEGISLATIVE DAYS

The House Of Representatives on Wednesday suspended Abdulmumin Jibrin, a lawmaker from Kano at the centre of the unfolding budget padding scandal, for 180 legislative days.

The House sits three days in a week and this consequently means that Mr. Jibrin’s suspension would last more than a year.

In a motion recommended by House Ethics Committee chairman, Nicholas Ossai, and adopted by the whole House, Mr. Jibrin will also not be able to hold any position of responsibility for the span of the current National Assembly.

Mr. Jibrin began stirring what experts now described as one Africa’s biggest parliamentary scandals in recent memory on July 21, a day after he was eased out as chairman of the powerful committee.

Although the House was taking a two-month recess at the time, Mr. Jibrin remained resolute in his quest to “end the massive corruption in the House.”

“My resolve to champion this cause was borne out of patriotism and desire to complement the present administration’s anti-corruption war from the legislative front,” Mr. Jibrin said in an email to PREMIUM TIMES on August 21.

Mr. Jibrin said the campaign had earned him “blackmail, propaganda and campaign of calumny” from Mr. Dogara, lawmakers loyal to him and their proxies.

The assault had been largely targeted at the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, and three other principal officers, whose resignation and prosecution he had continued to demand.

Mr. Dogara had announced the removal of Mr. Jibrin in a speech he read in plenary on July 20, alleging budget fraud and serial betrayal of trust.

To back his allegations against Mr. Dogara, Mr. Jibrin released damning documents to the media.

On July 30, the State Security Service sealed the secretariat of the Appropriation Committee in the National Assembly after Mr. Jibrin raised the alarm that Mr. Dogara had allegedly concluded plans to cart away computers and destroy evidence.

Mr. Jibrin also visited law enforcement agencies, including the EFCC, the SSS and the police, where he said he personally submitted petitions detailing evidence of fraudulent manipulation of budget by Mr. Dogara, his deputy Yusuf Lasun, House Whip, Alhassan Doguwa, Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, and nine others.

After several days of silence, Mr. Dogara succumbed to public demands for him to defend himself and came out with blistering statements denying all the charges against him.

Mr. Dogara took specific issue with the ‘budget padding’ catchphrase, saying it was a strange term to use when describing the actions of the legislature.

He also said lawmakers could not be probed by law enforcement agencies over any infractions in the National Assembly, but later walked back this statement.

At some point, the APC moved to contain the crisis, but its gag order lasted only a weekend.

Consequently, lawmakers began openly criticising Mr. Jibrin for allegedly defacing the National Assembly, dealing a major blow to his crusade.

Mr. Jibrin’s isolation became even more pronounced after 10 principal officers of the House released a statement backing Mr. Dogara and denouncing Mr. Jibrin. Amongst them was Femi Gbajabiamila, the Majority Leader who many thought would be reluctant to openly back Mr. Dogara.

The development sparked speculation that Mr. Jibrin would be suspended upon resumption of the House from recess.

The House resumed on September 20 and a lawmaker loyal to Mr. Dogara moved a motion the next day to have Mr. Jibrin probed for allegedly breaching the privileges of the members.

Emmanuel Orker-Jev, a lawmaker from Benue, proposed tough sanctions against Mr. Jibrin for the damage his allegations have allegedly wrought on the House.

“The image of the House has never been worse than this before. Hon. Jibrin was reckless and the allegations were false. He knew that the allegations were false and scandalous and he had no regards at all to whether the allegations were true or false,” Mr. Orker-Jev said.

The House subsequently assigned the matter to its Ethics and Privileges Committee for further investigation and to report back within a week with its findings and recommendations.

Mr. Ossai, chairman of the committee, convened the first hearing on the matter September 23, during which Mr. Orker-Jev submitted his allegations against Mr. Jibrin.

Mr. Jibrin received an invitation to appear before the committee on Monday. But decided to boycott the hearing, even though his demand that the sitting be thrown open to the public was met by Mr. Ossai. Mr. Jibrin also asked his lawyer, Femi Falana, to seek discontinuation of committee’s actvities in court.

Mr. Ossai said Mr. Jibrin’s failure to appear before his “properly and constitutionally constituted committee” was, in effect, a defence.

Mr. Jibrin had on Tuesday alleged subjudice saying the committee should not have sat since the matter was in court.

Mr. Jibrin’s suspension would see him banned from the premises of the National Assembly in the course of the disciplinary action. He would also not receive salaries or allowances.

Some sympathisers of Mr. Jibrin saw his suspension as partisan, draconian and counterproductive.

“This show of partisanship and support for Mr. Dogara is condemnable and too severe,” said a political analyst, Gbola Oba.

Mr. Oba said Mr. Jibrin had suffered the same fate as Dino Melaye who was suspended in 2010 for breach of members’ privilege. Mr. Melaye is now a senator representing Kogi West.

“We knew they would gang up against him as they did against Mr. Melaye,” Mr. Oba said. “This clearly shows that the House has failed to move beyond its counterproductive ways of suspending anyone who challenges the status quo.

“If the House were a serious body, serious attention would be given to Mr. Jibrin’s claim so as to foster a thriving democratic experiment within the country.”

AN OPEN LETTER TO A GOVERNOR - 'BASEET AYORINDE (PART 1)

I am Abdulbaseet Ayodeji Ayorinde, a son of a Pensioner in this state. One of us is all of us.

My father served Nigeria for 30years, He retired from civil service almost 15years ago. He served in different Ministry like Agriculture, Justice but mostly in Education. He retired as a PAA LIE (Inspector of Education). To my knowledge, My Father has contributed to the betterment of Education especially in this state. There are living witnesses today. Though you might be somewhere stealing a company's fund, as you're doing to our state now. So you may not know all these. My Father offered his life to development in Education sector. I can count several Autocrash he survived during this service. Throughout his service year, He got only a Peugeot 504 saloon car with his house. I can swear with anything that my father never embezzled a kobo from office.

He got several opportunities to join private sectors like Flower Mills, PZ etc, but he insisted he must serve his fatherland. He achieved this, and passed this across to all of us. I don't believe anyone could be more patriotic than him. All his achievements are on record. Go to schools in the state, then you will know.

Your own father did not even have opportunity to the 4corners of a classroom. He died as a "Tailor". I know this will surely get to you, as many of your cyberdogs are reading it now. I put up this to challenge you absolutely.

Firstly, according to your stupid and arrogant statement, you said "No Pensioner should be living by his/her pensions ". Yes! you're correct! My father has not been living by his pensions because if he does, you haven't paid him for almost 8months, and that means he should have died. Your pension cannot even purchase his monthly drugs. But his Lord is sufficient for him.

Let me remind you, that you have starved some of them to death. You have subjected many to terminal ailments like stroke, Hypertension and so on as you refused to pay them while the FG had never ceased giving you state and LG Allocations.

God will surely judge you. You have outrightly sent signals to serving civil servants, to steal as much as possible as their future may be doomed. Do you doubt why they don't want to retire? They are not blind to see how you treat retirees.

Secondly, you're surely known for your undisputed arrogance and pride, which make you utter ungodly and unguarded statements, you're too full of yourself that you feel on top of the world, as a mere Governor. You're one of the worst Governors in the country, you're one of the oldest ones, and yet check out the scorecards of young Governors like Ambode, Amosun, Aregbesola and the rest.

You're so myopic to have seen the gubernatorial seat as the peak of achievements where some are presidents. Someone is Obama and another is Vladimir Putin of Russia. They're far younger. I still ask for the reasons behind your utmost arrogance while you're still living.

You said "Any pensioner who properly trained his/her Child/ren, shouldn't be waiting for Pensions or Gratuities ". It's a pitty this is coming from a son of a wretched Tailor.

Well, Alhamdulillahi, My Dad as a case study, just got his 8th Graduate last month. Mr. Governor, you don't even have a son, and unfortunately a daughter of yours is facing murder charge at the moment, while the other is a Drug addict. I thought you well-trained your own daughters? lol.

Now listen well Mr. Governor, My Father's 1st born is a civil servant, 2nd also a civil servant in Lagos state, 3rd a civil servant in Ogun state, 4th a successful Business tycoon, 5th happy in a private firm, 6th a civil servant, I am the 7th, I serve in a Private firm in Lagos state too.

I'm sure you should be jealous of that. May God Bless my Father and all parents like him, who have well-trained their wards. God will provide for you pensioners, let the arrogant Governor die on the throne.

Abdulbaseet Ayorinde

THOUSANDS LOSE MONEY AS MMM CRASHES IN ZIMBABWE

THOUSANDS of people, among them civil servants and vendors, have lost thousands of dollars to fraudulent online pyramid scheme MMM Global Zimbabwe after it collapsed recently. The social financial network, which relied on an accelerating number of new members to pay off the old, abruptly terminated its services last week leaving participants stranded.

This comes as Econet’s mobile financial service platform, EcoCash yesterday distanced itself from the pyramid scheme. Participants claimed they were using EcoCash for their transactions.

Zimbabweans have in the past months been joining the online investment scheme in droves in a bid “to get rich quickly”. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe warned people that the scheme was fraudulent and there was no legal recourse in the event they lost their money.

The central bank said MMM, which advertises its operations through a website and recruiting agents, was not a registered or regulated entity. EcoCash yesterday said: “We have noted that some of these pyramid schemes are allegedly advertising in a manner that suggests that the Ecocash facility is a medium for prospective members to deposit their money. This is not correct.

“We advise our valued customers and all stakeholders that Ecocash is a licensed mobile payment platform that enables customers to make financial transactions such as sending money, buying prepaid airtime as well as paying for goods and services within the confines of the law of Zimbabwe. EcoCash promotes safe and legal transactions but will not be held liable for any losses arising from the use of EcoCash to engage in illegal activities such as Ponzi schemes.”

The scheme advertises itself as a mutual aid fund under which recruited members contribute money to assist others and are promised investment returns of 30 percent per month. Some of the people left counting their losses told The Herald that they received emails that the scheme had been suspended until September 15.

“All along things were moving in the right direction and we now have nowhere to claim our investments,” said Mr Tinashe Muza of Harare.

“When we started putting our funds in the scheme one could get assistance within seven days but things later changed to 14 days and when we were shut out the waiting period was 21 days. What it simply means is that the number of people in need of help has outnumbered the number of people joining. Right now we have nowhere to get our money which we invested.”

MMM stands for Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox and takes its name from its founder, Sergei Panteleevich Mavrodi of Russia. He founded MMM in 1989 and the scheme was declared bankrupt three years later leading to the disappearance of Mavrodi until his arrest in 2003.

Another victim, Mrs Rosemary Mawonde said: “We never thought the scheme would end this way as we believed that by using EcoCash to do the transactions, things were in order. I am surprised that EcoCash is also distancing itself from the scheme and it is clear that I will never recover the $300 that I invested.”

While some people who were skeptical about the scheme started with small amounts, it is believed some poured in thousands of dollars anticipating higher returns. The RBZ said the schemes were fraudulent as existing investors were ‘paid money not from genuine market investment of their funds, but from contributions made by new investors, until a point when the scheme can no longer attract new investors,”

“The participants are made aware that they make their money by recruiting new members who in turn must recruit more members,” warned the Central Bank.

PLAGIARISM: PRESIDENCY APOLOGIZES, ORDERS DISCIPLINARY MEASURES

The Federal Government has apologized to Nigerians for the plagiarism pointed out in the president’s speech at the just concluded “Change Begins with Me” campaign in Abuja,. Reacting to comments by Nigerians through the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Garba Shehu .

Mr Shehu responding to the allegation through his twitter handle @Garshehu .

“PMB has ordered that prompt & appropriate disciplinary action be taken against those responsible for a wrongful insertion in his speech delivered on September 8, 2016 at the launch of the “Change Begins with Me’’ campaign.”

“It was observed that the similarities between a paragraph in President Obama’s 2008 Victory Speech and what President Buhari read in paragraph 9 of the 16 paragraph address while inaugurating the Campaign on Thurs., Sept. 8, are too close to be passed as coincidence. There was a mistake by an overzealous staff and we regret that this has happened. Already, a Deputy Director in the Presidency has accepted responsibility for the insertion of the contentious paragraph.”

"This serious oversight will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate sanction meted. The Presidency wishes to state in the clearest possible terms that it regrets this unfortunate incident and will ensure that this does not happen again”

” President Buhari urges Nigerians to look beyond this incident and focus on the message of change which the country needs in order to restore our cherished value systems” he said .

OPINION POLL: IS MAKE-UP ART A CREATIVITY OR AN EVIL ACT?

Hello!!!

It is OMOIYAKUNMI again and its so good to bring to you another exciting, educating and enlightening episode of OPINION POLL, a segment that takes us to the streets and avails us the opportunity to air people's  views on salient issues on this platform.

In this piece, OMOIYAKUNMI presents people's opinion on a topic that has recently been generating controversies all over the media, MAKE-UP ART.

Until recently, Make-up art has never been given a second thought until the dramatic and magical inception of some make-up gurus who changed the whole concept. The amazing works of some  make-up artists will make jaws to drop and so, some felt it has become some thing else. They feel its purely aimed at disguising the true appearance of  a person.

Well, as I am expected to take an impassive stand in this matter, I  sampled opinions randomly but lets be reminded that these opinions are personal judgements and as we know, we all have a right to our individual opinion.

Here are some of the comments;

That is not creativity, and I can't call it evil, but it's very close to evil because of the wrong impressions make up give guys about ladies. It encourages fake life in the name of looking good.
– Labby Owoboye, Student

To me it is not an evil act. It has employed some people who should have been unemployed. Nobody loves to look dirty, everyone wants to appear lovely.

– Iyabo Makinde, Farmer

Creativity to ladies but an evil to the opposite sex because you can easily go home with a chimpanzee who is opportune to get a very good make-up artist.
- Segun Oluokun, Civil Servant

It’s an evil act. People who know me well know I'm totally against it. Firstly, going by my religion, it's not acceptable. As a socialite, we all crave for modesty. The rate at which make up art is increasing moral decadence is alarming. Kindly note that all this I said are via close experience and societal judgment.
– Lawal Ayoola, Counselor

I take it as an evil act, with reasons. If you look at it, make-up art can be described as a deception.
– Gausu Musbau, Cleric

It is creativity and not an evil act. Make-up art is simply the enhancement of a natural beauty from the original weather face or body.
– Salam Dayo, Civil Servant

For me, make-over business or make up art is a good thing. Looking good is good business for both the customer and the professional. It’s a means of livelihood for the artist and it gives good looks to the client or customer. It’s creativity.
– Olajide Oladayo, Agri-preneur

The art of make up to me is creativity. Its purely bringing out the beauty in you for people to behold. It must be done moderately and shouldn't cover up your real/natural beauty. It makes you look special and it's gives you more confidence when you know you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
– Olofin Adeola, Business-Woman

Opportunities of entrepreneurship exists in the cosmetology industry for the creative ones. Today, makeup business is now a business to celebrate in Nigeria because of the creativity that artists are putting into their work. As a societal lady, your backroom staff is incomplete without a makeup artist. Several people now make money from tying head-gears (gele) at parties. Now, it takes creativity and ingenuity to do makeup unlike the situation 12 years ago. Identifying skin colours, covering contours, marks and other technical activities require extreme creativity and skill. Why do people request the services of makeup artists during events and daily dressing? Its simply because of the expertise and creativity they add to the person.
- 'Poto Rahman

It is creativity. It showcases beauty, expressions and also creates jobs.
– Shittu John, Farmer.

It’s an evil art. Innocent guys are often deceived.
– Jolade Akinsanya

There is nothing evil in it, I will consider it an act of dexterity in creativity. It is not evil in the sense that the products of the make-up do not constitute devious or devilish impacts on any of their viewers. All works of arts are products of creative thinking, reasoning and craftsmanship.
– Alh. Adebayo

The views concerning make-up art are multidimensional. Our society sees it as a form of creativity which generates employment opportunity for the youth. It's evident the profession has gained a lot of attention from the youths because, majority want to know how to do make-overs, draw eye brows and others. But, Islamically, there are some evils attached to it. There are some forms of make-ups which are not halal. I'm not so vast in hadiths but, from what I have read and heard. It also promotes zinah in one form or the other.
- Olasunkanmi Mariam
